Last night, the Boston Bruins signed Justin Brazeau to a two-year, two-way NHL deal, which was a modest but noteworthy move. With this deal, the 6-foot-5 winger is now eligible for recall to the NHL, provided the Bruins choose to do so.
Given Brazeau’s performance with the Providence Bruins this season, Boston had little choice but to make this move. He has a career-high 18 goals and 37 points in 49 games this season with the AHL team.
The 26-year-old Brazeau has also grown with each season. When he joined Providence in 2021–22, he had 31 points and 15 goals in 51 games. After that, he finished the previous season with 67 games played, 16 goals, and 45 points. He has, without a doubt, been improving, and as a result, he might actually be a viable option for the Bruins’ bottom six.
Oskar Steen’s placement on waivers frees up a space on the Bruins’ roster. It is reasonable to ask if Brazeau will be called up for a recall given that he signed his contract soon after learning of this information.
The Bruins’ bottom six have been struggling lately, so it could be a smart idea to call up a big, skilled forward with a lot of muscle like Brazeau. While we will have to wait and see if he is called up from here, Boston made the right decision in signing him to an NHL contract.
