The veteran catcher Martin Maldonado was officially signed by the Chicago White Sox on Friday.
The Sox have assigned infielder Zach Remillard to an assignment in order to make room for him.
The team has seven days to decide whether to send him to the minors, trade him, or release him.
This past season, the 29-year-old infielder made his White Sox debut and recorded 147 at-bats. With a.252 batting average, he drove in eighteen runs and hit one long run.
In addition, he did contribute a fantastic moment during the 2023 campaign, creating some rare major league history with his June debut.
About that, you can read this article.
Remillard, a Coastal Carolina product, was selected in the tenth round of the 2016 draft.
Maldonado, on the other hand, has an option for 2025 and is guaranteed $4.25 million in 2024.
The 37-year-old backstop, who has played for the Astros, Cubs, Royals, Angels, and Brewers, just finished his 13th season in the major leagues. He played for the Astros in 2018 and returned for the second half of 2019 until 2023, contributing to the team over several dynastic eras. In 2019, 2021, and 2022, he assisted Houston in making it to the World Series, which they won in the latter year.
Maldonado is a lifetime player who never really pitches.207 hitter who only managed a.191 season for Houston last year. Although he did hit fifteen home runs, his true asset is the way he manages a pitching staff.
In 2024, he’ll have plenty of opportunities to demonstrate that with the Sox. After placing fourth in the American League Central in 2023, the team will provide opportunities for a number of young and inexperienced pitchers in the upcoming season. This offseason, the team has already added Erik Fedde, Jared Shuster, and Mike Soroka.
Maldonado will be counted on to assist in the development of young catcher Korey Lee, whom the organization acquired around the trade deadline last season, in addition to supporting the pitching staff.
