According to his agent, Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports, Charlotte Hornets guard Kyle Lowry has consented to a contract buyout, which will allow him to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers for the remainder of the season, ESPN reported on Saturday night.
According to Bartelstein, ESPN, Lowry will sign a $2.8 million contract with the Sixers after clearing waivers in the next few days. On Sunday, the Hornets announced that Lowry had been released.
The six-time All-Star guard, Kyle Lowry, has always wanted to play for the 76ers in his hometown. Now, with his longstanding old coach, Nick Nurse, by his side, the former Villanova and Cardinal Dougherty High School graduate will have the opportunity to battle for a postseason berth.
Following Lowry’s trade from Miami to the Hornets last month in exchange for Terry Rozier, Lowry and Charlotte agreed that he would not play until beyond the trade deadline. Prior to the Hornets buyout, Lowry had $10.6 million remaining on his $29.7 million contract for 2023–2024.
Lowry will join a revamped Sixers lineup following the trade deadline, which also features guard Buddy Hield. Together, they will attempt to maintain the team’s playoff form until Joel Embiid, the team’s reigning MVP, returns from his several-week absence following surgery on his left knee.
