The Boston Bruins organization has taken note of Georgii Merkulov’s growth in his second season in Providence as he has been on a roll this month.
Merkulov continued his amazing December on Wednesday night by scoring one goal and providing an assist. With 12 games played, the 23-year-old has 10 goals and 8 assists, good for fourth place in the AHL with 30 points. He had an impressive two-goal, three-assist performance on December 9 to cap up his sophomore AHL season. Following his brief but fruitful time at Ohio State University, he was named to the All-Rookie Team.
The undrafted forward made an impression during the summer’s offseason workouts, and he knew what he wanted to improve upon going into this season with Providence.
According to team-provided video, Jim Montgomery told reporters, “I think the thing that’s been the most promising things we’re hearing is how quickly he’s closing at D-zone and how his 200-foot game has up ticked.” “It’s not shocking to learn that someone is tied for third in scoring and that his 200-foot game is improving. Strong defense creates opportunities for attack.
At KeyBank Center on Wednesday, Boston defeated the Buffalo Sabres in a thrilling comeback victory. A four-game losing trend was ended with the win, but Merkulov could be able to jumpstart the offensive, particularly with Matthew Poitras representing Team Canada in the IIHF World Junior Championship.
When asked if she would consider contacting Merkulov, Montgomery responded, “I think it’s just when opportunity creates itself.” “The team isn’t performing well because of injuries occasionally, or because of your play when you’re playing well. Different conditions usually surround why particular guys are given the chance to be called up.
Merkulov was not present for the Bruins’ practice on Thursday at Warrior Ice Arena, but before the team returns to action on Saturday against the New Jersey Devils, there may still be a chance.
