This is the time of year for insane takes.
Brock Purdy, the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, has been the talk of the town following his erratic performance in the team’s divisional round victory over the Green Bay Packers.
Purdy has been scrutinized despite leading the Niners to two consecutive NFC championship game appearances and owning a 17-5 record as the starting quarterback. On Saturday, he completed just three of eight intermediate pass attempts for 43 yards and came dangerously close to throwing a pick-six straight into safety Darnell Savage’s chest.
Among his detractors is former Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings, who expressed doubts about Purdy’s capacity to have an impact on the game.
Is he a competent QB? Indeed. Does he make a difference? “No, he’s not,” Jennings declared while making a visit on “The Carton Show” on FS1.
After suggesting that San Francisco may benefit from Bears quarterback Justin Fields, Jennings—who won a Super Bowl with Green Bay in 2011—continued.
“If he does not win, you have to go and try to find a difference maker at that position,” he stated. “A guy maybe like Justin Fields.”
The other members of the panel opposed the proposal.
“Kirk Cousins, I would have been like, ‘oh okay,'” co-host of the program Willie Colon remarked. “Hey, Justin Fields? For us to even think of Justin Fields as a capable quarterback, the second half of the season was necessary.”
The Bears own the first overall draft pick in the offseason, so it’s unclear what they will do with Justin Fields.
Purdy will get the opportunity to disprove his doubters by winning a Super Bowl berth when the 49ers play the Lions in Sunday’s NFC championship game at 5:30 p.m. CT.
