January 10 – On Tuesday night in Tempe, Arizona, the Arizona Coyotes overcame a late deficit to defeat the visiting Boston Bruins 4-3 thanks to a goal by Nick Schmaltz at the 4:04 mark of overtime.
The Coyotes’ three-game losing streak was ended by Schmaltz, who collected a feed from Clayton Keller and glided into the bottom left circle for the victory.
Arizona also had goals from Keller and Dylan Guenther in addition to an assist from Matias Maccelli.
Ingram Connor made 29 saves.
The Coyotes were 1-for-3 on the power play and had a 36-32 shots lead.
Boston lost for the second straight game despite goals from David Pastrnak, Jesper Boqvist, and Jake DeBrusk.
Morgan Geekie of Boston contributed two assists.
After making a save in overtime, Linus Ullmark (32 saves) went off in pain. Schmaltz’s winning high-glove shot was the only one that relieving pitcher Jeremy Swayman had to deal with.
Despite appearing to be hurt, Boston rookie Matt Poitras also did not make a comeback. Following the game, the Bruins did not immediately release information about each injury.
Early in the third period, Arizona took a 3-2 lead thanks to back-to-back goals, but DeBrusk’s goal forced OT for Boston, which had earlier led 1-0 and 2-1.
At 5:04, DeBrusk turned in a pass from Hampus Lindholm in the right circle and scored on a power play to tie the game for the Bruins.
At 4:41, Pastrnak scored the first goal of the power play. After Pavel Zacha flicked the puck out of traffic and to Pastrnak for a shot from the left circle, Geekie narrowly missed a tic-tac-toe finish at the post.
At 8:12 in the second, Keller tied the game with the Coyotes’ own power-play goal. He took the ball off the left wall and cut inside to bury his own rebound after a scuffle in front of the net.
Boqvist gave Boston a 2-1 lead 50 seconds after Keller’s goal, dribbling up the right wing and into the high slot for a wrist shot. Boqvist scored his first goal as a member of the Bruins without any help.
With 3:30 remaining before the second half ended, Guenther tied the score 2-2 with a wrister that completed a nice passing play including Logan Cooley and Nick Bjugstad.
At 52 seconds into the third, Maccelli, trailing the play, blasted in the rebound of a Lawson Crouse shot to give the hosts a big lead.
