During the first round of the 3-point shootout on Saturday during the NBA All-Star weekend in Indianapolis, Donovan Mitchell was eliminated.
Only the top three scorers move on to the next round, and Mitchell finished seventh out of eight shooters with just 21 points in his opening round.
The event was won by Milwaukee’s Damian Lillard, who defeated Minnesota’s Karl-Anthony Towns and Atlanta’s Trae Young in the final.
Mitchell is playing in his second All-Star game with the Cavaliers and his fifth overall.
At 28.4 points per game on average, he is also the fourth-leading scorer in the league.
The Starry 3-Point Contest has been one of the highlights of the NBA All-Star Weekend in recent years. For many fans, it’s been more fun than the Slam Dunk Contest, which has become less exciting because so few celebrities are participating. The first round was one for the ages since all participants scored at least 20 points. Four players scored 26 points, so a tiebreaker was needed since only three are going to the final round.
Trae Young set the pace with 26 points, which put pressure on Donovan Mitchell, Malik Beasley, Jalen Brunson and Lauri Markkanen. Beasley had the lowest score with 20 points, while Brunson and Markkanen were one make away to have scored 26 points.
