Philadelphia On Thursday, the Phillies agreed to one-year contracts with left-handers Ranger Suárez and Gregory Soto, right-hander Jeff Hoffman, and infielder Edmundo Sosa, avoiding arbitration with all but one of their five eligible players.
But Alec Bohm, the third baseman, and the team were unable to come to an arrangement. Before Thursday at 8 p.m. ET, the two parties were required to communicate wage information for the forthcoming season.
Philadelphia answered with $3.4 million, while Bohm is requesting $4 million. The Phillies and Bohm could agree to an arbitration hearing during Spring Training, or they could decide to settle earlier.
The team traded figures with José Alvarado and Seranthony Domínguez last year, eventually reaching a contract agreement with both players ahead of a possible hearing. In order to avoid arbitration, the Phillies signed both Domínguez and Alvarado to multi-year extensions in addition to reaching new agreements with them in February of last year. This involved essentially purchasing Domínguez’s salary-arbitration eligibility for the last two years.
Bohm, 27, is currently in the first of three possible arbitration years.
Regarding the players who came to terms, reports state that Suárez agreed to a $5.05 million contract, which allowed him to avoid arbitration for the second year in a row. Suárez earned $2.95 million in 2023 and started 22 games during the regular season with a 4.18 ERA before having another excellent postseason campaign. He will be managed by the team until the 2025 campaign.
Together with Hoffman and Soto, two important bullpen components, and versatile infielder Sosa, the team also made progress.
In order to avoid arbitration, the Phillies’ three other arbitration-eligible players, right-hander Dylan Covey ($850,000), catcher Garrett Stubbs ($850,000), and outfielder Jake Cave ($1 million), agreed to one-year contracts earlier this winter.
