According to MLB Transactions Daily, the Astros have claimed right-hander Declan Cronin off waivers from the White Sox. A week ago, the Sox designated the righty for assignment. With a 40-man roster filled, Houston will have to make an equivalent move.
In 2019, the White Sox selected 26-year-old Cronin out of Holy Cross. In 2023, he pitched in nine games for the White Sox in his major league debut. With a 9.00 ERA, he went 0-1 for Chicago, who placed fourth in the American League Central.
Houston seems to be liking what they see, and they might try to add him to the bullpen in 2024. Hector Neris is a free agent this offseason, so the Astros may have some opportunities.
Houston has demonstrated an ability to improve players who were cut by previous teams, so maybe they can do the same here.
Last season, the Astros advanced to the American League Championship Series after winning the American League West. The Texas Rangers defeated them in seven games after they had defeated the Twins in the ALDS.
After winning the World Series, Texas became the champion from the AL West for the second year in a row. The title was won by Houston in 2022. In 2017, they also triumphed.
