January 7: The Boston Bruins defeated the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning 7-3 on Saturday night thanks to Trent Frederic’s third two-goal performance of the year.
The Bruins responded to the visitors’ 1-0 advantage with a three-goal burst, and they never looked back as they won their fifth game in a row with a season-high seven goals.
The Bruins also had goals from Charlie McAvoy, Morgan Geekie, Jake DeBrusk, and Charlie Coyle in addition to David Pastrnak’s goal and assist.
Matt Poitras and Hampus Lindholm of Boston each contributed two more assists.
Ullmark Linus made 23 saves.
For the Lightning, who have dropped four of their last six games, Andrei Vasilevskiy made 20 stops, Brayden Point netted twice, and Nikita Kucherov added a goal and two assists.
Just 21 seconds later, the Lightning led 1-0 thanks to a turnover behind the net that let Kucherov set up Point for a blocker-side finish on Ullmark up front.
The score was tied at 4:42 thanks to a goal in the last seconds of Boston’s first power play. Frederic flipped a turnaround shot from outside the crease following a pass from center point Kevin Shattenkirk.
At 14:56, Poitras and Danton Heinen won a corner battle and pushed the puck up to McAvoy, who made a point shot that got through traffic to give the Bruins their first lead.
At 1:49 of the second, Frederic scored his second goal. To begin the play, Poitras passed to Matt Grzelcyk and then took a hit from Tanner Jeannot of Tampa Bay; nonetheless, Frederic scored on a second opportunity at the left crease.
