According to ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel (via X), the Red Sox have signed catcher Mark Kolozsvary to a minor league contract. An invitation to Boston’s major league Spring Training camp is included in the deal.
Kolozsvary’s MLB career consists of one game (or one half-inning as a defensive replacement) with the Orioles this past season, and ten games with the Reds in 2022. Shortly after making that one and only appearance for the O’s, the 28-year-old backstop was designated for assignment, then outrighted. Shortly after, he signed a minor league contract with the Twins.
Kolozsvary, who was the Reds’ seventh-round selection in the 2017 draft, hasn’t hit much in his minor league career. In 300 plate appearances at Triple-A, his slash line is just.174/.282/.301. However, it was his all-around strong defensive style that allowed him to go up the ladder and into the majors. It’s a skill set that has helped catcher careers last, and if Kolozsvary is a late cut, he will come to Boston’s camp hoping to impress opposing scouts or Red Sox brass.
Roberto Perez signed a minor league contract earlier in December, and the Red Sox already have Connor Wong and Reese McGuire as their regular catching combo.
