Jim Montgomery gave Linus Ullmark, Brandon Carlo, and Matthew Poitras the best news imaginable on their injuries.
The group mentioned earlier is still traveling with the Bruins. With Ullmark recovering from a lower-body injury and Carlo (put on injured reserve on Thursday) and Poitras still recovering from their respective upper-body ailments, all three players are listed as day-to-day.
For Thursday’s game against the Vegas Golden Knights, the reigning Stanley Cup champions, who arrived in the wee hours of the morning following a 3-0 loss in Colorado, none of them dressed. However, Bruce Cassidy’s team had far less of an injury crisis than Boston’s, going into their third game against his old team with seven players on injured reserve.
The Golden Knights held on on a night where neither team was able to muster many opportunities for a score in the opening forty minutes. They even survived two near-injuries when Mark Stone, the captain, and Jack Eichel left the game in the second period.
By the third, Stone and Eichel were back together. Early in the last stanza, the former put home a feed from Jonathan Marchessault and drew first blood on the power play.
After the Eichel marker, the Bruins, who had been struggling with penalties and a lack of offensive production all evening, found their skating legs. They eventually struck the back of the goal at 12:18 when Matt Grzelcyk’s shot got past Logan Thompson and through traffic.
The Bruins repeatedly depended heavily on Jeremy Swayman while giving up 25 shots on goal. Remaining up to the challenge, the fourth-year Bruin made several critical stops, including a highlight-reel robbery of Ivan Barbashev, to help his side advance to overtime.
