This offseason, the Orioles have added an outfielder and a pitcher via the waiver wire; but, they also witnessed the departure of a previous pitcher in the same manner. On Wednesday, the San Diego Padres declared that they had claimed Logan Gillaspie off of the Boston Red Sox’s waiver list.
Throughout 2023, Gillaspie experienced ups and downs with the Orioles, alternating between the major leagues and Triple A Norfolk on several occasions. After being DFA’d by the Orioles in September, the Red Sox claimed him off waivers.
He played for the Red Sox organization’s Triple A Worcester team for the remainder of the season. The Padres claimed him off waivers and added him to their 40-man roster, which now stands at 35 players, after the Red Sox outright removed him off the 40-man roster and attempted to pass him off as depth.
In 2023, Gillaspie averaged two home runs and five walks per nine in the majors, with a 6.00 ERA, 6.37 FIP, and 2.11 WHIP.
