The Padres grabbed Luis Patiño, a former San Diego prospect, off the Chicago White Sox’s waiver list on Friday.
The Chicago White Sox placed right-hand pitcher Luis Patiño on waivers, giving the Padres a chance to reclaim one of their formerly highly valued prospects.
Patiño ranked 48th overall in baseball and as the Padres organization’s top prospect in 2019. After emerging from Colombia’s system, he was well-regarded and even participated in the 2019 All-Star Futures Game as a pitcher.
His only major league action came in 2020, when he made a brief appearance with the Padres. He appeared in 11 games and pitched 17 innings, recording a 5.19 ERA.
He was the main player in a deal that brought in the most money during that offseason.
In the 2023 season, he was traded by the Rays to the White Sox. This past season, he put in 17 innings for Chicago, recording a good 3.57 ERA.
He accumulated 136 innings with a 5.02 ERA and an 82 ERA+ over portions of four seasons. He is currently back with the Padres as San Diego looks to realize the enormous promise he possessed as a prospect.
He offers a four-pitch mix that consists of a changeup, four-seam fastball, slider, and sinker.
Even so, Patiño still has a lot of time left to earn your trust at just 24 years old. Most believe that Padres pitching coach Ruben Niebla can help him reach his full potential.
The Padres are in dire need of depth in their starting pitching staff. Even though in 2023 he saw more bullpen action, the Padres will probably attempt to develop him into a starter.
This in no way addresses the Padres’ need for a reliable, seasoned starting pitcher. But given some time to grow, Patiño might become a useful member of the pitching staff. To cover the gaps, the Padres still need to add a few pitchers who are ready for the major leagues.
