Rhys Hoskins, a former first baseman for the Philadelphia Phillies, and the Milwaukee Brewers reached a two-year agreement on Tuesday night, according to a source with the Associated Press.
According to ESPN, the two-year deal is for $34 million, with an opt-out available following the first season. Because the purchase was pending a physical inspection, a person with knowledge of the move confirmed it to The Associated Press under the condition of anonymity.
Following the announcement that Bryce Harper would start at first base in 2024 by President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski, Hoskins—who has played for the Phillies for the last seven seasons—was anticipated to depart this offseason.
Hoskins was allegedly in frequent communication with the Chicago Cubs during free agency before agreeing to a contract with the Brewers. With a 92-70 record in the previous season, Milwaukee won the NL Central before losing to Arizona in their Wild Card Series.
From June 3 to June 5, Hoskins will play three games in a series against the Brewers at Citizens Bank Park for the first time.
Hoskins had an ACL tear during spring training, which kept him out of the Phillies’ 2023 season entirely. If the Phillies advanced to the World Series, he might have had another opportunity to play for them, but the Arizona Diamondbacks eliminated them from the postseason in the National League Championship Series.
During his tenure in Philadelphia, Hoskins was adored and regarded as a fan favorite. He witnessed the Phillies’ rebuild firsthand after being selected by them in the fifth round of the 2014 MLB draft. Late in the 2017 campaign, Hoskins made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut, and he was an instant success.
Hoskins hit 148 home runs in 667 games during the regular season while wearing a Phillies uniform. Throughout his career, he had batting splits of.242/.353/.492/.846.
During the team’s 2022 run to the National League pennant and World Series, Hoskins had several memorable moments. One such occasion was his bat spike after he homered off Atlanta Braves pitcher Spencer Strider in Game 3 of the National League Division Series.
