With the exception of acquiring Aaron Nola, the Philadelphia Phillies’ offseason has been very quiet; however, they did make some news on Tuesday.
Former utility player Phil Gosselin is returning to the Phillies to work in front office. Team insider Luke Arcaini reports that he will work as a Special Assignment Analyst on the Baseball Development department.
It’s unclear from that title what Gosselin’s new duties will be in his new position. Still, it never hurts to have an old hand around, particularly if they’re relatively young and experienced with the current game.
As Gosselin only appeared in 83 games with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2019 and 2020 combined, it’s likely that the fans there don’t remember him too well. He slashed, but his impact was minimal.255/.312/.363 in his Phillies career, with 43 strikeouts compared to 40 hits.
Even though he was never the most talented player on the field, he put a lot of effort into making the most of his abilities. He outlasted many players with more inherent talent by managing to piece together a 10-year MLB career with seven different teams.
Gosselin is only 35 years old and retired following the 2022 season, so he has a lot of good qualities to offer. He’s youthful, full of energy, and will approach his first baseball operations position with new eyes.
He also studied from some of the top instructors in the game during his lengthy tenure in the Atlanta Braves organization, both in the minors and majors.
Gosselin may no longer be playing, but his new profession is only getting underway.
