Boston still is seen as one of the top landing spots for one of the best pitchers in baseball
Could this offseason be a momentous one for the Boston Red Sox?
Despite adding former All-Star Lucas Giolito, Boston’s starting rotation still has gaps. Before trading away Chris Sale, the Red Sox needed to sign two starters going into the summer.
Giolito gives Boston what it needs, but the team probably still needs two pitchers. Every possible pitcher has some connection to the Red Sox. But with Spring Training drawing near, Boston’s options are becoming more limited.
One player that is still available and has been connected to the Red Sox on multiple occasions is Blake Snell, the 2023 National League Cy Young Award winner. Although it’s unknown where he will end up, Tim Britton and Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic believe that Boston is still one of the “best fits.”
The teams that Britton and Gleeman felt fit the best were the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees, and San Francisco Giants. “Few pitchers have hits free agency coming off as dominant a stretch as Snell put together in his walk year: From the end of May on, he compiled a 1.20 ERA over 23 starts, blanking the opposition in 11 of those outings (and only twice allowing more than two runs).”
Snell is among the top pitchers in baseball, thus Boston would benefit greatly from acquiring him. The Red Sox’s willingness to pay is unknown, but it might make sense to add someone. Boston should give Snell serious consideration as they need to add a front-line starter.
