Though he’s leaving the Red Sox, Justin Turner will remain in the American League East.
Turner will sign a one-year contract with the Blue Jays, as first reported by Jon Morosi of MLB Network. The 39-year-old, who occasionally starts at first base and third base, is anticipated to be Toronto’s primary designated hitter in the forthcoming Major League Baseball season, according to Morosi.
According to reports, the one-year contract includes a base salary of $13 million with performance and roster bonuses for an extra $1.5 million.
The two-time All-Star, who chose to forego his contract in early November, is coming off a strong 2023 campaign in Boston. Turner played in 146 games despite persistent injuries, launching 23 home runs and amassing a career-high 96 RBI. In addition to his normal DH duty, the veteran infielder saw action at first base, second base, and third base, demonstrating his versatility for Alex Cora’s team.
The Red Sox and the Blue Jays are scheduled to meet 13 times in 2024, with the first head-to-head series set for mid-June at Rogers Centre. Turner is slated to make his first trip back to Boston a week later when the Jays visit Fenway Park for a three-game set
The offseason for the Boston Red Sox has been unusually quiet. The Red Sox have attempted, at least in recent years, to acquire some of the best players available through free agency or trade. However, starting pitcher Lucas Giolito and outfielder Tyler O’Neill are the only noteworthy additions made by the Red Sox this winter.
The news that infielder Justin Turner was agreeing to a one-year, $13.5 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays dealt an even greater blow to Boston’s 2024 roster. Yes, the Red Sox witnessed one of their top hitters defect to an AL East team.
Turner’s departure has resulted in fewer designated hitters. It might have been more difficult to sign a guy who the Red Sox could have used to replace Turner.
FanSided MLB insider Robert Murray talked about possible matches for the remaining designated hitters available in the free agency market during the most recent episode of The Baseball Insiders. Speaking of former Miami Marlins slugger Jorge Soler, Murray mentions an unidentified squad that is vying for his services.
