In a Martin Luther King Day matinée at TD Garden, the Boston Bruins defeated the New Jersey Devils 3-0 thanks to goals from Charlie Coyle and David Pastrnak on Monday afternoon. In addition to scoring 60 points for the eighth time in the previous eight seasons, Pastrnak also contributed an assist throughout the contest.
Goalie Jeremy Swayman of the Bruins recorded his 12th career shutout by stopping all 31 Devils shots. Swayman had lost four straight starts before winning two in a row.
The first period saw the Bruins outshoot the Devils 16-8, including the opening five shots on goal of the contest. After completing a crafty move at the net-front on a Bruins power play, James van Riemsdyk appeared to have scored his eighth goal of the year, but the Devils protested for offside, therefore the goal was overturned on review. Thus, there was no score at the first interval for either team.
Still, the Bruins would score the game’s opening goal 30 seconds into the second half. The Bruins took a 1-0 lead when Brad Marchand applied the breaks down the half boards and then backhanded the puck to Coyle, who finished with a deft backhand lift of his own.
With the goal, Coyle tied his season high of 29 goals scored, making it his 15th of the year.
During a power play at 3:22 of the third, Pastrnak scored his second goal. Through strong forechecking, passing, and puck management, the Bruins created havoc around the Devils net, and Pastrnak eventually put a devastating one-timer on a cross-ice feed from Charlie McAvoy.
