The Detroit Red Wings will begin considering their options for the trade deadline. Steve Yzerman will think about a number of things, including what to do with Patrick Kane moving forward. Bob Heyrman recently noted that the team has options, and Yzerman will need to decide which one to choose.
The Detroit Red Wings must make the proper decision, though. For the Red Wings, it’s an easy choice. Maintain Patrick Kane’s presence. The Red Wings ought to make an investment on Kane even in the event that they don’t make the playoffs. The seasoned striker is getting along well with his new team.
Although some people may find it strange, Kane has performed well since wearing a Red Wings jersey. Furthermore, some people’s angst is directed toward the future. In the end, he has been able to perform and will only cost less than $2.75 million for the remainder of the 2023–24 campaign.
Detroit must also see this. Retaining Kane could be a wise move, even though they will need to make some decisions prior to the trade deadline. I do not now perceive it that way, even if it may sound like a greater risk than a profit.
Patrick Kane must remain a member of the Detroit Red Wings.
Some people could disagree with this, and in a few months it might not seem like the appropriate decision. Kane has added some value, though. Since coming back on the ice and into game shape with Detroit, Kane has played in 16 games. He has 14 total points from six goals and eight assists.
With the team’s powerplay units, Kane has jumped right in and already has a couple powerplay points—three, to be exact. However, his mere presence has been a successful one. Teams have had years of experience defending him because of his ability to produce quality work with the puck on his stick during a powerplay.
Kane has been the Red Wings’ main man on the powerplay, getting the puck to him and allowing him work to create scoring opportunities. His poise has definitely shown. In 5-on-5 situations, he has also performed well, displaying a composure and puck control that is amazing to see.
Overall, the Red Wings have benefited greatly from having Kane around. A low-cost contract that has proven worthwhile thus far must be satisfying. However, Kane’s future is the matter at hand.
Detroit ought to make a concerted effort to hold onto Kane. Why not invest in Kane if he is willing to stay with Detroit? It would be worth exploring the possibility of a contract extension for the Red Wings if Kane can be an affordable option once more in 2024–2025.
