The Toronto Blue Jays owe more than $5 million in luxury tax payments after surpassing the CBT level of $233 million in 2023.
Here is a breakdown of the teams who exceeded the mark, via MLBTradeRumors:
For surpassing the $233MM base CBT barrier, each of the eight clubs owes the following.
Mets: $100,781,932
Padres: $39.7 million
Yankees: $32.4 million
Dodgers: $19.4 million
Phillies: $6.98 million
Blue Jays: $5.5 million
Braves: $3,2 million
Rangers: $1.8 million
The biggest player on the Jays’ roster, outfielder George Springer, counted as a $25 million hit for luxury tax purposes. Counting over $20 million were Kevin Gausman ($22 million), Chris Bassitt ($21 million), and Hyun-Jin Ryu ($20 million). After that, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. ($14.5) and Jose Berrios ($18.7) came next.
After cutting Ryu’s salary, who is now a free agent, Toronto will save money even though they will have to pay Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette more in arbitration the next season. In addition, the organization will no longer be receiving the salary of free agents Whit Merrifield, Matt Chapman, Kevin Kiermaier, and Brandon Belt.
It remains to be seen what the total salary will be for the 2024 season and whether the Jays will again breach the tax threshold because the team will obviously have to spend money to replace those players.
In 2023, Toronto qualified for the playoffs as a wild card team after finishing third in the American League East. Regretfully, in the wild card round, they were defeated by
