The Baltimore Orioles acquired the player they truly wanted this offseason, despite not making a major trade thus far.
The premier starters that might become available on the trade market this offseason are still being associated with the Baltimore Orioles. It should come as no surprise, as that is this roster’s most obvious weakness and one that appears poised to contend for a championship right now.
Nevertheless, despite the obvious necessity, the front office has not taken any action to bring in that kind of player.
This is not to suggest that there won’t be a move; it hasn’t happened yet.
With their star closer, Felix Bautista, sidelined for the whole season due to Tommy John surgery, the Orioles front office focused on finding backend bullpen help.
They were able to get Craig Kimbrel’s services on a guaranteed one-year contract, which serves as a bridge until Bautista returns.
The veteran closer’s enduring recollection of wasting important opportunities in the NLCS during his final season with the Philadelphia Phillies was the reason for the lack of enthusiasm around this transfer.
Even so, Kimbrel had a solid season, concluding with 71 appearances, 69 innings pitched, and 23 saves out of 28 chances. His ERA was 3.26.
Baltimore saw him as a key signing despite his late-season problems and believes he can contribute to a strong bullpen group in 2024.
“Yennier Cano and others working only in setup duties might allow him to deepen and dangerously increase the bullpen… The Orioles intend to take their chances in October.
