Duke basketball looks to be battling only one other challenger for VJ Edgecombe.
VJ Edgecombe, a longstanding target of Duke basketball, revealed the final three in late December. Jon Scheyer’s Blue Devils would play rival recruiting powerhouse Kentucky, while Baylor would be the dark horse. However, rumors now suggest that just two are still in play as the Long Island Lutheran (N.Y.) guard prepares for his announcement on Sunday.
From the esteemed Hoophall Classic in Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon, On3’s Joe Tipton revealed that Edgecombe, ranked fifth overall on the 247Sports 2024 Composite, is no longer taking John Calipari’s Wildcats into consideration.
The 6-foot-5, 180-pound explosive five-star intends to announce the winner of the match between Prolific Prep (Calif.) and Montverde Academy (Fla.) before halftime. The game begins on ESPN 2 at 7:30 p.m. ET. Fans of Duke basketball should so learn about Edgecombe’s much awaited choice about an hour later.

The Duke recruiters would secure a second No. 1 class over the course of the three cycles in which Scheyer has been making all the decisions if the Bahamian sensation selects the Blue Devils, who are still regarded as the clear favorite by the 247Sports Crystal Ball and Rivals FutureCast (they finished No. 2 the other year, 2023).
VJ Edgecombe isn’t the only unsigned 2024 prospect still on Duke’s radar, though. The other is Khaman Maluach, an NBA Academy Africa center who was just reclassified at seven feet and is a predicted five-star. He hasn’t given a timeframe for his choice.
