Mbappe set to wear mask after breaking nose
France kicked off their Euro 2024 campaign with a 1-0 win over Austria last night, but big concerns remain over Kylian Mbappe after their star man suffered a broken nose late on in the victory.
After colliding with Austrian defender Kevin Danso while challenging for a header, the forward left the stadium and was taken to hospital and it’s been confirmed that the Real Madrid man will now wear a mask to allow him to return to play. But he remains a major doubt for Les Blues’ next group clash against the Netherlands on Friday.
“Kylian Mbappe has returned to the base camp of the French team. He will undergo treatment in the coming days, without undergoing surgery immediately,” said the FFF in a statement.
“A mask will be made so as to allow the No 10 of the French team to consider resuming competition after a period devoted to treatment.”
Mbappe’s teammate Adrien Rabiot also hinted that the forward will sit out Friday’s clash with the Dutch, adding: “Mbappe is fine. He said that maybe he’ll be ready for the third match.”
Roy Keane blasts Mbappe for re-entering pitch
Mbappe was booked for re-entering the pitch and sitting down after suffering his broken nose last night, something Ireland legend Keane insisted was “out of order.”
The Spanish referee didn’t allow France to make a substitute when the ball next went out of play, therefore leaving them with a man down momentarily as they defended their 1-0 lead, as Mbappe re-entered the pitch in an attempt to stall the game and allow his side bring on a replacement.
“He’s gone back on the pitch, whether he’s trying to stop the play, but just sitting on the pitch, I don’t like to see this, this is out of order,” Keane told ITV Sport.
“Listen, whether he’s been instructed by the manager to go back, he’s had treatment, he’s come off. To go back on and sit on the pitch, he deserved that yellow card. You don’t like to see it.”
