Asmir Begovic, the former Chelsea, Everton and Stoke City custodian, has been linked with a move to St James’ Park.
Asmir Begovic has emerged as Newcastle United’s surprise goalkeeping option this month.
The 36-year-old is out of contract with Queens Park Rangers this summer and is considering his options for the 2024-25 season. West Ham United and Celtic have also been linked with a deal for the former Stoke City custodian, who was previously signed by Newcastle manager Eddie Howe for AFC Bournemouth in 2017.
Begovic appeared in 62 Premier League games for Bournemouth under Howe and recently visited Newcastle to watch England play Bosnia and Herzegovina at St James’ Park. The veteran custodian, who played 63 times for Bosnia before retiring in 2020, was in attendance at St James’ Park as England won 3-0.
Newcastle are looking for goalkeepers this summer, with Loris Karius expected to be released at the end of the month and Martin Dubravka facing an uncertain future. Burnley custodian James Trafford has been extensively linked with a £15 million plus add-ons transfer to Newcastle.
Begovic would be regarded as a more cost-effective option considering his possible availability on a free transfer. However, after 28 appearances for QPR last season, he has not ruled out signing a new contract at Loftus Road.
Begovic told TalkSport: “I am currently looking at options, talking to obviously QPR and see what happens there, see what happens in the next few weeks, it is still pretty early in the transfer window.
“Nothing has been decided yet. I am keeping myself fit. I really enjoyed last year, the fact that I played so many games.
“In the second half of the season, for us, the team became together really well. Let’s see if we can keep this group of players together, have another run at it next year, see what else is out there and take it from there.”
