Notre Dame Football: List of Championships & Best Finishes Through the Years

Notre Dame football has long been one of the most prestigious programs in college football history. With a legacy built on dominance, legendary coaches, and iconic players, the Fighting Irish have solidified their place among the sport’s elite. Over the years, Notre Dame has claimed 11 national championships and produced numerous memorable seasons.

National Championships

Notre Dame’s 11 national titles came in the following years: 1924, 1929, 1930, 1943, 1946, 1947, 1949, 1966, 1973, 1977, and 1988. These championships were won under some of the greatest coaches in football history, including Knute Rockne, Frank Leahy, Ara Parseghian, Dan Devine, and Lou Holtz.

The team’s first national title in 1924 was led by Rockne and the legendary “Four Horsemen” backfield, which helped Notre Dame finish the season undefeated with a Rose Bowl victory over Stanford. Rockne also led the Irish to championships in 1929 and 1930, cementing his status as one of the sport’s most influential figures.

The 1940s saw a golden era for Notre Dame under Leahy, who coached the team to four championships in 1943, 1946, 1947, and 1949. The 1947 team was particularly dominant, finishing the season undefeated and widely regarded as one of the greatest teams in college football history.

Parseghian brought Notre Dame back to prominence with national titles in 1966 and 1973. His 1966 team famously tied Michigan State in the “Game of the Century,” securing the championship despite the controversial ending. Dan Devine added another title in 1977, highlighted by the “Green Jersey Game,” in which Notre Dame stunned USC en route to a national championship.

The program’s last national title came in 1988 under Holtz, as the Irish completed a perfect season and defeated West Virginia in the Fiesta Bowl. Led by quarterback Tony Rice and a dominant defense, Notre Dame was the undisputed No. 1 team in the country.

Recent Success and Near Misses

Since the 1988 championship, Notre Dame has come close to adding another title but has fallen short. The team reached the BCS National Championship Game in 2012 but lost to Alabama. More recently, the Irish made College Football Playoff appearances in 2018 and 2020, though they were eliminated in the semifinals both times.

As the Fighting Irish continue to compete at a high level, the pursuit of their 12th national championship remains an ongoing goal. With strong recruiting and coaching, Notre Dame remains a powerhouse, aiming to add another chapter to its historic legacy.

I was sat in B1 and honestly the most miserable dead crowd. I was ashamed to be sat among them. Some were okay but me and my husband were rocking right through stood for some parts dancing away, paying respect to what was the biggest and best send off of all time.
