Chaim Bloom will work as an advisor to the President of Baseball Operations of the St. Louis Cardinals, four months after being let go by the Boston Red Sox.
Chaim Bloom has been appointed by the St. Louis Cardinals to serve as an advisor to the president of baseball operations, the team said on Monday.
From 2019 until 2023, Bloom served as the Boston Red Sox’s chief baseball officer. After that, the franchise fired him. Following three consecutive seasons without making the playoffs, the Red Sox traded for Chicago Cubs executive Craig Breslow to replace Bloom.
Before moving to Boston, Bloom was a member of the Tampa Bay Rays for fifteen years. Eventually, he was named Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations in St. Petersberg, where he served as the second-in-command of the team.
The Cardinals’ Vice President and General Manager is Mike Girsch, while their President of Baseball Operations is John Mozeliak. The two have worked in the front office of St. Louis for 29 and 18 years, respectively.
The Cardinals are among the league’s most successful modern teams thanks to their leadership stability; they were the victors of the World Series in 2006 and 2011. Prior to the 21st century, St. Louis missed the playoffs in 11 of the 12 seasons that preceded the current era. However, in the last 24 years, the team has made the postseason 16 times.
From 2020 to 2022, the Cardinals were eliminated from the National League Wild Card round three times in a row. However, they recently experienced their poorest regular season record in almost thirty years in 2023.
Even though Bloom garnered a lot of criticism from Red Sox supporters during his time there, adding an analytics-driven advisor like him could help St. Louis make the correct decisions going forward with the margins.
